About LGBT Network Wolverhampton

LGBT Network Wolverhampton is a not-for-profit community group funded by Wolverhampton Network Consortium (WNC) to promote the local LGBT community through funding local groups, providing representation for LGBT people in the city and holding events throughout the year to raise awareness of the community and encourage good relationships across Wolverhampton society.

In addition to funding from WNC, we also occasionally apply for funding from other organisations for specific pieces of work as and when we are able.

We are currently in the process of setting ourselves up as a charitable company limited by guarantee. Once this is done, it will improve our ability to apply for and secure funding, and hopefully enable us to expand both our ambitions and our reach.

Aims

As an organisation, we operate with six main aims:

• Promotion of the group

  To promote the group and encourage more participation by the community and to help promote LGBT activities and events in the local area

• Research

  To further research already completed and to expand our knowledge of the LGBT community in Wolverhampton

• Social

  To provide information on events that are taking place in the local area, and to help organise new events

• Organising campaigns

  To campaign for changes to local and national laws and policies to improve life for LGBT individuals and groups

• Information and advice

  To provide information and advice to LGBT people on a range of issues including mental health and sexual health

• Educating others

  To educate Wolverhampton on LGBT issues, raising awareness of our needs in order to ensure that they are met, and to challenge attitudes

History

The network was set up in 2002 as a result of research carried out by Wolverhampton Network Consortium, which was designed to assist in the ongoing development of various community networks across the city. It's aim was to make a positive difference to the LGBT community in Wolverhampton by:

• developing a long-term strategy for the LGBT community
• educating and informing the Wolverhampton LGBT community of the facilities and services already available to them
• developing the profile of the Wolverhampton LGBT community
